Akan is a lecturer in the College of Medical Sciences, University of Calabar and honorary Infectious Diseases Consultant at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital. He is also a public health professional with diverse experience in research, programme development and implementation. He heads the Clinical Expertise Committee of Multi-Drug Resistant Tuberculosis (MDR-TB) treatment centre in Calabar, Nigeria.
He also directs the Healthcare Development initiative (HDI), a non-for-profit group promoting public health approach to disease control in Africa. His research interests span both communicable and non-communicable diseases such as tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, cardiovascular diseases and diabetes mellitus. Over the last decade, he has provided consultancy services to the following state, federal and international agencies within Nigeria. He is an innovative manager and team player who remains committed to promoting research and development in Nigeria, and mentoring of young people.
