Meet Margaret Jane Sylva from OXCAMP-The Gambia
Margaret was born in Banjul, The Gambia where she joined OXCAMP in January 2016 as a Commerce student from St. Joseph’s Senior Secondary School. She has recently enrolled at the University of the Gambia studying Economics and aspires to be a renowned Economist and Mathematician!
“I will use my knowledge in Economics to help in the development of my country. I will also use my knowledge in Mathematics to help students who find it difficult because I have seen that it is a great problem for students in my country.”
Through the mentorship programme, Margaret has been able to overcome her shyness, built confidence and has received invaluable career guidance.
Margaret’s Mentorship Experience
My experience as a mentee is very motivating and inspiring. Prior to joining the OXCAMP mentorship programme I was very shy, but as time went by the programme really helped me overcome it. I also had the opportunity to discuss different careers with my mentor and she also assisted me with choosing a career path. I also interacted with different people through the mentorship programme.

Margaret’s Summer Camp Experience
My experience in the summer camp was very interesting. I arrived in Ghana on the Monday feeling excited! It was my first time in Ghana so I was eager to explore the country. My predictions were right! The country was very colourful with a great infrastructure and a lot of buildings. The people were welcoming and very helpful! They also have different kinds of food which are very colourful and appetizing.

On the day of the camp which commenced on Wednesday, all the participants met at the University of Ghana, Legon, where the camp was to be held. All the participants introduced themselves and then we were grouped into threes in a room. Most of the participants were from Ghana mostly secondary school students. We also met the OXCAMP team in Ghana and the founder of OXCAMP Mr Boakye. The team was extremely helpful throughout the camp. The following days we met with different experts in different fields who gave seminars on a variety of important topics which were very motivational. Some of the topics discussed were; how to write a good CV, economics, scholarships and how to apply, science, arts, confidence building, etc.
“My stay in Ghana and participation in the OXCAMP summer camp was a great opportunity and I made many friends!”
We also had the opportunity to visit different places such as The Supreme Court, Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum and we passed by the State House. My stay in Ghana and participation in the OXCAMP summer camp was a great opportunity and I made many friends! At the end of the summer camp we were all given a certificate of participation. It was truly a memorable experience!
